Boston Road Trip Eats + Adventures

Mornin’!

Please tell me you know that song

Evidently, yesterday was another mini road trip, but this time to Boston! My dad also came with us this time around since he had a day off of work. We left at around 8:30 AM, so breakfast was taken on the go:

Overnight oats in a jar! I just switched out the real spoon with a plastic one and then headed out.

We visited my brother (who goes to Northeastern University) for the day to catch up on life and visit his new apartment since he also had day off for President’s Day (I’m on winter break right now). He’s livin’ off campus like a big shot now. ;) I kept calling him “Domestic Ben” while also telling him to clean his kitchen appliances more thoroughly. I’m not an annoying sister.

My face = judging.

After checkin’ out his new place, we walked around town for lunch. It was super chilly and we were getting hungry, so we chose a random Cuban restaurant that we were passing.

I ordered the yellow rice with shrimp. According to the menu it was supposed to come with fried green plantains (nowhere to be found) and a “green salad.” Hm. The main dish itself was very tasty nonetheless.

The worst part of our dining experience came when it was time to pay the bill. My mom saw that they charged a lot more for some of our dishes than what was noted on the menu. The waitress said casually, “Oh this is our old menu. The prices have changed.” (Note: Everyone in the restaurant received the same menu.) Uhhhh….ya think you could have told us that when we ordered?! Even after admitting their mistake, they still didn’t offer to lower the prices or anything. Lucky for them, Mom was feeling gracious yesterday, so she just paid the price on the bill and still gave a tip. It’s safe to say that we will not be returning there.

Anyway, we started walking around a park after lunch, but we thought our ears were going to fall off from the frigid wind, so we headed back to Ben’s apartment to eat popcorn, do some planks, and then say goodbye. It was a short and sweet day trip, but we always love spending time with Ben!

Ben added parmesan to this microwave popcorn, and I nearly inhaled the whole bag.

Another four-ish hours of road trippin’ later and more snacking…

Honeycrisp apple slices and a few roasted unsalted cashews

…and then it was dinner time! We decided to stop by our favorite Thai restaurant on the way home as the finale to our nice President’s Day.

Grilled chicken salad with peanut dressing. So good.

Dessert for everyone to share: mango with coconut milk sticky rice. My favorite Asian dessert!

My life this weekend: Eat. Drive. Walk. Eat. Drive. Walk. Eat. Drive. Sleep.

Now my butt hurts from sitting so much. My belly is certainly happy from all this awesome food though!

I hope you all have a great day!

So tell me:

Americans, what did you do for President’s Day?

Have you ever had a bad restaurant payment experience?

What are your favorite road trip snacks?

  1. As much as I enjoy road-tripping ..I think back to back trips will make me slightly crazier than I am :-p. Its so cool that you went to visit Ben though! And gave some of your domestic insight to his living place.
That shrimp dish does look good..at least that impressive looking salad allows it to shine ;)?
Fave road snacks: dried fruit, bars, sandwiches, toffees!

  2. Now that’s an impressive “green salad!”  And what happened with the menu? I’m not sure I would have been as gracious as your mom — that kind of stuff just drives me crazy. At least your experience on the way home was a better one… even if it DID involve pesky peanuts :P

  3. You’re mom sounds like classy and patient woman!!!!
Road trip snacks: pretzels, twizzlers, bananas and pb, and sandwiches!!
And that sticky rice looks delicious!!!!

  4. Ahhh I’m always jealous when I see you post about Naturally Nutty – I need to order myself some before I go crazy!
All of your eats look amazing – lovin’ the road trip snacks (and that parmesan popcorn – I mean come on!!). You eat such diverse food, too – I think that’s awesome.
    I’m glad you’ve had a great trip!! :)

  5. I once found a plastic baggie of hexnuts (google that if you don’t know what I mean) in my pad see-ewwwwwwww!!! It was so gross…and honestly, so sad-that restaurant used to be one of my faves! They’ve surprisingly since closed…

  6. mmm all the eats look delicious girl! and that naturally nutty nut butter looks amazing. i was on their website a few days ago and almost bought a few jars but didn’t because of the shipping costs. someday soon i’m sure i’ll cave! haha

  7. Girl, why are you so darn gorgeous? Share some! :D

    So. Many. Delicious. Eats.

I may need to take a trip down to Boston now. ;) Haha, but I’m glad you had a great weekend! I’d love to take a trip from the warmer weather here for a weekend in the snow.

  10. Eating out two times in a day…. that’s my girl ;) that sucks about the first restaurant!! I can’t believe they would do that. A few months ago I went to a really fancy place with my family, and the waitress asked us if we wanted chips or fries. We all said fries, and when we got the bill all the fries were $1.50 extra! We weren’t as generous though… we took some off her tip lol! And what kind of a green salad is that?!

That nut butter sounds AMAZING. And that dessert.. love it!
